Will Obamacare be a Net Benefit for the Country?

Politicians on both sides of the aisle will undoubtedly continue to spin the actual facts about the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, to support their respective causes, however the most important metric to look at is whether or not the healthcare system in the Untied States is better or worse of as a result of this law.

While it is still too early to know for sure, some of the metrics that should be considered are: the number of Americans covered, particularly in relation to the number enrolled before the law was passed, the cost of coverage and the rate of price increases in the healthcare industry, and quality of care.

We should know within the next few months how many are actually enrolled and paying for coverage through Obamacare, but we won’t know for a few years whether the other metrics are better or worse off under this program.

Three Mistakes to Avoid with Life Insurance

Avoiding these three mistakes on life insurance is extremely important. After all, you and your family’s life depends on it.

First off, you should never wait to get coverage from a life insurance policy when you have a family who is dependent on you. Although you are young and may live for many more years to come, there is still a chance something could happen. You cannot predict a car accident, or some other life threatening situation that can change everything.

Second, be sure you look over your life insurance policy again anytime something changes in the way you and your family live. For example, if you begin to make more money from your job because of a promotion, then increasing the benefits of your life insurance policy is probably a smart decision.

Lastly, be sure you purchase enough insurance. This means you will need to think about the future. Remember, if your kids decide to go to college, you will probably want the life insurance policy to be able to cover for some of that. This means, don’t just buy the minimum that will only cover the funeral costs and monthly bills.

Healthy Summer Eating Habits

It’s the season of backyard barbecues and family picnics, but it’s always bathing suit weather in Southern California, so don’t let your nutrition slip for the sake of convenience. Some easy summer eating tips will keep you in shape and full of energy. These apply all year round, but they’re particularly useful when you’re confronted with delicious, indulgent treats on a regular basis and have difficulty resisting.

  • Simplify your diet; instead of counting calories and listing the treats you can no longer eat, incorporate your favorite, freshest flavors into each meal and complement them with a variety of different colors to make sure your meal is balanced
  • Start with slow changes, such as replacing butter with olive oil in your pasta dishes or sprinkling flax and chia seeds over your salads for extra nutrition
  • Keep making small changes; one less hamburger is one less step toward heart disease, so even if you don’t rule out every unhealthy or high-risk food group, that doesn’t mean you should throw caution to the wind and abandon your healthy choices altogether

Many insurance companies will reward your good health and safe lifestyle with lower premiums. Contact Save on Health Insurance in Los Angeles, California for more information about insurance policies and coverage in the LA area.

The Top Five Shortcuts To Leading A Heart-Healthy Lifestyle

Heart-healthy – remove this sentence as it was only added to meet the keyword requirement for submission.

If you love eating, then you probably already know that eating a heart-healthy diet is the one thing you can do to ensure a long, happy life that’s free from pain and disease. However, the healthy part of heart-healthy is the part people have the most trouble adhering to.

Here are a few quick and easy shortcuts you can take on your way to a heart-healthy lifestyle.

1.  Cut Your Red Meat Intake.  Red meat is extremely high in saturated fat.  Start by cutting your portions then try substituting as many of your red meat meals as possible with chicken or fish.

2.  Watch Out For Those Fat Grams.  Always read the labels on all packaged foods.  Anything that has more than two grams of saturated fat per serving is considered extremely bad for you.  It’s also a good idea to avoid any food that has more than one gram of trans fat per 100 calories.  Most pre-packaged snack foods don’t fall within the maximum trans fat range.

3.  Eat More Plant Foods.  Plant foods are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber.  They can lower your blood pressure and protect your arteries from damage.  Start slowly and pick one or two plant foods to add to your daily diet.  As your body adjusts, add a few more.  You’ll be surprised how easy this really is and how your body will start to crave the healthy stuff over the junk.  If you find eating plant foods difficult, why not try making some homemade smoothies.  Many smoothie recipes mask the taste of the vegetables you don’t like so you’ll never know the difference.

4.  Watch Your Weight.  If you’re overweight, you have a higher risk of developing heart disease.  However, by implementing the above three steps, you’ll be able to avoid many of the common diseases that plague millions and live a healthy life.

5.  Quit Smoking.  Smoking is the quickest way to develop a myriad of life threatening diseases.  We know you already know this but it’s important that we stress how serious we are about your quitting.  Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit smoking today.

5 Simple Energy-Boosting Tips

When you feel drained, you can’t function at work and you can barely muster up the strength to do things you enjoy. If you find yourself crashing before the day gets warmed up, revive your energy with these energy-boosting tips.

  1. Drink up. Being tired is often a sign of dehydration. If you’re feeling sluggish during the day, try drinking a large glass of water.
  2. Go nuts. Hazelnuts and cashews contain magnesium and protein. Snacking on a handful of these nuts can give you a quick pick-me-up.
  3. Take a stroll. Physical activity has been shown to reduce fatigue and increase energy. Instead of using your lunch break to run errands, strap on your tennis shoes and walk around the block.
  4. Give your coffee a boost. Adding a little low-fat milk to your morning brew will give it a protein-jolt and give you the stamina you need to get things done.
  5. Stop and mediate. Meditation is not only a good way to relax, this practice can make you more alert and energetic.

Drinking water, walk, meditating, eating nuts and adding milk to your coffee can help fight energy-drains and give you the boost you need to feel refreshed during the day.

What You Should Know About Medigap Plans

Have you considered Medigap coverage? When you choose a plan keep these points in mind:

1. Medigap is not the same thing as Medicare Advantage. An Advantage plan provides Medicare benefits, usually through a network of preferred providers. Medigap insurance helps pay medical costs that Medicare does not cover, including copayments and deductibles. Medigap also offers services Medicare does not cover, including care when you travel outside the United Sttes.

2. You need Medicare Part A & B coverage to apply for Medigap insurance.

3. Medicare is a government program, but Medigap plans are offered by private insurers.

4. Medigap plans charge a monthly premium over and above your Medicare Part B premium.

5. Medigap plans rarely cover prescriptions. You need Medicare Part D for medication coverage.

6. Vision care, hearing aids, dental work and long-term care are usually not covered by Medigap plans.

7. You can’t have a Medicare Savings Account Plan and a Medigap policy.

8. Your carrier cannot cancel your Medigap plan as long as you pay your premiums.

The Benefits of Umbrella Coverage

Your vehicle and homeowners insurance policies provide you with liability coverage for most situations within certain limits. Umbrella insurance offers additional liability coverage beyond what these policies have to offer. Umbrella insurance also protects you from such claims as libel, false arrest and slander which many other policies don’t provide. Here’s a brief synopsis of what you can expect from umbrella insurance coverage.

Liability for bodily injury – pays medical expenses for individuals injured in an accident you cause. This includes injuries sustained from auto accidents, accidents in your home, animal bites, etc.

Liability for property damage – pays for damages to other people’s property due to accidents you are responsible for. This includes damage to someone else’s vehicle, personal belongings, school property, building, etc.

If you own a rental property, umbrella insurance will protect you against liability claims for injuries people sustain on your property. With umbrella insurance, you are also protected from lawsuits due to slander, false arrest, libel, malicious prosecution or imprisonment.

Long Term Care Insurance Takes Health Insurance to the Next Level

The importance of health insurance has been getting a lot of attention across the country, and indeed it is important to have good insurance that will help you maintain your health. But even with lots of preventative care it is still possible to experience a long term health emergency or injury that could leave you with expenses that go beyond what your health insurance policy would pay for including care that takes place in your home, a nursing home, or other facility.

It’s tempting to assume that you’ll always be okay if you take care of yourself, but more than 70% find themselves disabled and needing help by the time they turn 80. There’s no way to guarantee you’ll beat those kind of odds. Many factors go into the cost of long term care insurance including the age and state of health or the person getting insurance as well as how much coverage is purchased and how long it lasts. The younger and healthier you are, the better your rates are going to be.

At Save-on Health Insurance Services in Los Angeles, California we’ve spent more than 20 years using our resources to help our clients across the state find insurance that will meet their needs, whether that’s health, life, home, commercial, umbrella or long term care insurance.  To find the right coverage for your specific needs contact Save-on Health Insurance Services today.
